Recorder
Department
Description:
The
County Recorder is the custodian of all legal records pertaining to real estate
in the county. County government is dependent upon taxation for its
existence and it is the land that is taxed. All other county offices
depend on the accuracy of real estate records. This involves recording
deeds, mortgages and approximately 400 different real estate documents.
In
Le Sueur County the Recorder is also the abstractor for the county. An
abstractor compiles all the records pertaining to a certain piece of property in
an abbreviated form. This is called an abstract. The Recorder's Office
creates new abstracts as well as continues existing abstracts.
Certificates
of Title are prepared under the Torrens system. The County Recorder is
also the Registrar of Titles as an arm of the District Court in adjudicated
title. Certificates are originated and guaranteed by the County.
The
County Recorder files all instruments pertaining to personal property under
Uniform Commercial Code for the statewide computer network. Searches of
these filings are prepared when requested.
Other records found in the Recorder's Office include military discharges from all
branches of the armed forces; vital statistics of birth, death, and marriages
(beginning in 1870); bond oaths and appointments of county officials. A
Tangible Interest Form must be filled out before a copy of birth and death
certificates can be issued. Contact the Recorder's Office for more
information.
Passport applications are also prepared in this office Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments and walk-in’s are accepted.
The
public may request certified copies of most documents filed in the Recorder's
Office.
